The President of the Theater Arts and Motion Producers Association of Nigeria, TAMPAN, Bolaji Amusan, fondly referred to as Mr. Latin, on Tuesday dispelled rumours of the death of top rated comedian, Babatunde Omidina, who is more popular in showbiz circles as Baba Suwe.
In a video message on Tuesday evening, Mr. Latin described Omidina’s rumoured death as “fake news”. He said “the purported rumour about Baba Suwe’s death is fake news. Baba Suwe is alive. He is presently in America undergoing treatment. I thank you all”.
The Anchor Online’s findings revealed that Baba Suwe, who had been down with an undisclosed ailment arrived Rhode Island in the United States for treatment in the early hours of Tuesday.
It will be recalled that Omidina’s career started taking a dip shortly after his wife, Monsurat Omidina’s death in circumstances many still believe to be mysterious. He however picked up and produced a number of movies, keeping his place among the best comedians in the Yoruba genre of Nollywood.
Then came the drug scandal that took its toll on his psyche and career. He was arrested while trying to board a flight to Paris for an engagement on allegations of drug trafficking. For about a fortnight, Baba Suwe was detained by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, proving that he had ingested drugs that were reportedly seen via body scanners however became a futile game. He later sued the NDLEA for defamation and the violation of his fundamental human rights.
Omidina laid low for some time before producing his next movie. He went off the radar again for some time and the next time he got into the news, it was about a strange ailment over which finds were raised to enable him get proper medal care. The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo donated a million Naira towards his treatment while a Prophetess reportedly paid the sum of N 10 million.
